Prayers of the People | December 24

Heavenly father, We offer our thanks for your holy church, and for this much anticipated occasion.  Our hearts are full of joy at the gift of your son, whom you sent to dwell among us. In many places around the world, people are feasting tonight, but in other places tonight is marked by fear and violence.  Burst into those places with your life-giving hope, we pray. Just as you invited low-status shepherds to witness your newborn son, we ask you to show grace to the cold and the hungry in our city.  Use us, your servants, to share warmth, food, and hope with those of your children who need it most. Finally we pray for those who weep when they would like to be celebrating.  Comfort those who are lonely and those who have lost loved ones.  Be the joy within us and among us. By the good news of our salvation brought to Mary by the  angel, hear us, O Lord.

Lord, grant us peace. By the mystery of the Word made flesh, hear us, O Lord.

Lord, grant us peace.

By the birth in time of the timeless Son of God, hear us, O Lord.

Lord, grant us peace.

By the manifestation of the King of glory to the shepherds and magi, hear us, O Lord.

Lord, grant us peace.

By the submission of the maker of the world to Mary and  Joseph of Nazareth, hear us, O Lord.

Lord, grant us peace.

By the baptism of the Son of God in the river Jordan, hear us, O Lord.

Lord, grant us peace.

Grant that the kingdoms of this world may become the  kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; hear us, O  Lord.

Lord, grant us peace.

Amen.

Written by Dorothea Toews, to be offered in worship on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2010.
