Prayers of the People | June 24

Creator of all, we thank you for the sun, whose warmth and light allows plants to grow in the earth. We celebrate this season of summer – a time of optimism and abundance. We are grateful for the opportunity to be outside enjoying the splendor of the created world. Help us to never take our environment for granted, but to demonstrate our thankfulness through intentional, active care for the earth and all its inhabitants.

Today we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist. May we, like John, find ways to prepare for God’s arrival in our relationships, businesses, public policies, religious practices, and larger cultural spheres. Where we are able, help us to fill in the valleys of discrimination and level off the mountains of pride. As your people, may we build a road without ruts, without rocks—your promised path of peace.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God who hears, we offer thanks for the universal church of which we are a part. Thank you for the mysterious unity we have with your people around the world. Please help us to work together for the health of the earth, the peace of the nations, and the dignity of all humanity.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God who acts, we offer thanks that Egypt has held the first free presidential election in its history. As political tensions still run high, please guide the new president Mohommed Morsi and protect the people. We also thank you for National Aboriginal Day celebrated this past week and for the sunrise ceremonies held across Canada. May Canadians of all ethnicities grow in understanding of and appreciation for each other. Thank you for reports that violent crime is decreasing in many areas of North America, and that research for a more sustainable future is on the rise. Please intervene for those in our world who experience hunger, violence, displacement, poverty, and despair.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God who provides, we offer thanks for this community of St. Benedict’s Table. Thank you for the opportunity to gather here on a weekly basis to refresh our spirits in song and silence, to be challenged by the scriptures, and to enjoy the family unity of your supper table. Thank you for all who gather here, especially for those who are graduating this month from high school: Ben, Justin, Julianne, and Davis. Thank you for their hard work and their achievement. Grant them discerning hearts as they move forward into the summertime of their lives.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God who cares, we offer now the names of those known to us who have needs… Thank you for the people close to us, those we love. Be near them and meet their needs.

God who comforts, we pray for those who have died. Thank you for good memories and life lessons, for the ways they helped shape who we are. Please keep these precious ones safe in your rest, and be with us as we mourn. We pray especially for the Plett family, as they grieve the death of Corinne’s mother.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen.
