Prayers of the People | January 6

I

call the community into a time of prayer.

Creating Spirit,

You invite and embrace all who seek you. Thank you for your desire and willingness to join us together into one body. Make us willing to be grafted into the body of your universal church. As you unite us with others who are different from us in any number of ways, teach us to find our identity in love, service, and worship. Remind us again that love is greater than doctrine.

Lord, in your mercy,

Hear our prayer.

Guiding Spirit,

Thank you for your life-sustaining gift of earth. Thank you for air, and fire, and water, without which we could not live and thrive. Remind us that these are your gifts to all your creatures, and not to us alone. Teach us to forego greed in favour of generous sharing, and to forego violence in favour of compassionate peace. Open the eyes of those in leadership everywhere, to see the basic humanity that all people share, as well as the differences between communities and nations.

Lord, in your mercy,

Hear our prayer.

Loving Spirit,

Thank you for bringing together the people who are gathered here tonight. Thank you for those who are very much a part of this community, in spite of their physical absence. We are learning to love and support one another through life’s journey. Teach us to be ever more faithful in this, in our church community and in our wider circles. At this time we name to you, aloud or in our hearts, the names of those whose needs we know.

Lord, in your mercy,

Hear our prayer.

Comforting Spirit,

Thank you for gathering and protecting us, like a hen does with her chicks. Sometimes life hurts us deeply. Other times, it is death whose sting we find hard to bear. Gather into your sheltering wings those who are facing death, and those who have already died. Comfort those who live and mourn. Give refuge from the storm under your wings, and when the time is right, send your chicks out again to return to a joyful exploration of life.

Lord, in your mercy,

Hear our prayer.

Amen.
