Prayers of the People | November 16

Let us pray. Father, we come to You in the name of Christ Jesus, and in a spirit of deep thanks for these moments of quiet and silence to pray together in unity in this place. We our mindful that as we move into Winter and approach the season of Advent of the need to surrender our energies and pray now for Your church, for each one of our sisters and brothers around the world, for our loved ones and for ourselves. In surrender to Your “dearest will,” Lord God, we ask that You prepare our Advent-hungry spirits for the miracle and mystery of the birth of the Christ Child. Align our hearts with Your will as we bring these intentions and requests before You:

Lord God, just as Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to be awake and watchful for the coming of Christ, we ask that You deepen and enrich in each one of us a desire to be keenly aware and sensitive to the movement of the Holy Spirit in the upcoming Season of Advent. Stir and stretch our spirits with the capacity to imagine that Christ is able to be birthed in infinitely new and creative ways in His people. By Your grace lend us the courage and freedom to believe for a fresh Epiphany of the Christ of Christmas in each one of our lives.

Lord, in your mercy,

Lord Jesus, As we move into the midst of the brisk pace of the Season and with our participation in the many family and community celebrations that so characterize our lives in the season of Christmas, I pray that, daily, each one of us might be mindful and conscious of the essential value in taking time away to cultivate a place of quiet and reflection with You in the midst of the continual festivities that draw us into good community.

Lord, in your mercy,

Merciful God, we pray for the peace of the world. We pray for every leader and for each citizen in every country across the globe; we pray for Your intervention in the places of continued unrest, stubborn impasses and wars in the countries of Nigeria, Iran, Syria , Ukraine, Israel and Palestine and we continue to pray for the containment and eradication of the Ebola virus in West Africa. Raise up faithful, godly and obedient leaders who are committed to peace, tolerance, justice and health for all of humanity.

Lord, in your mercy,

Gracious God, we pray specifically that Your church across the world, that its leaders and its people might be united in love and courage to bring forth with truth and authenticity of the powerful and saving message of the gospel of Christ, our Saviour. We ask that You might guide and bless the work of the priests, pastors and communities of the many churches across the city of Winnipeg as they declare Your word and minister to Your people. We pray specifically for the staff at saint benedict’s table: equip and strengthen Jamie, Larry and the music ministers, Jaylene, Kalyn and Carolyn as they move into deeper ministry throughout the season of Advent.

Lord, in your mercy,

Loving Christ, We pray for the needs of the organizations directly supported materially and prayerfully by st. Benedict’s table: These include Agape Table, House Blend Ministries and the ongoing work of El-Shaddai in Haiti, to name a few. Bring joy and life and faith to those who draw very real sustenance directly from these ministries, Lord. And as the cold of winter becomes a very real factor for many on the streets, let us be agents of material abundance, so as provide warm food, clothing and shelter to our needy sisters and brothers. We continue to pray for continued true bridge-building between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples of our city.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer

Jesus, our brother, we pray for the people of saint benedict’s table and for all who worship and fellowship here each week, but also for those who are united with us each week from a distance. I pray for relief, hope and healing for all who are here this evening who suffer, are struggling and who might be experiencing despair. In Your divine forgiveness and Your infinite love, embrace those here who ache and are in need of Your comfort and hope and encourage those in our midst who are joyful and strong to reach out to the hurting around them. We pause for a moment as we name aloud or call to mind those known to us that are in need of prayer. In faith we commit these individuals to You, Christ Jesus and we commit ourselves to interceding for them in prayer and in practice.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer
.

Amen.
