Prayers of the People | July 10th

Gracious God, your word instructs the church to be a compassionate traveller on the road of life. make our witness to your love strong & clear. Keep your church from sinking into institutional quick-sand – the sudden entrapment in the details of organizational life. Enlist your church in the service of your will toward others.

Lord, in your mercy….

We want to love our neighbour because Christ first loved us. Yet – how often have we written people off because of the colour of their skin, or where they’re from, what they do or where they live, how they speak or what they wear, what they believe or how they relate to us? Christ, you teach us that anyone in need is our neighbour. Lord, forgive our lack of love & charity. Forgive our moments of indifference to others. Open our eyes & hearts to victims of poverty, war, isolation, exploitation, oppression, & disease, so that no one would b e left to die on the roadside – alone & deserted.

Lord, in your mercy….

God of compassion & grace, help us this day to see the needs that exist beyond our own lives and to truly see our neighbours in need. Let our hearts break for the things that break your heart. Let it move us beyond pity & shedding a few tears into action. Let us take off our coats, roll up our sleeves, get dirty, and try to make a difference ourselves in the lives of others.

Lord, in your mercy….

Christ, until your return you have no body on earth but ours, no hands but ours, no feet but ours, no eyes but ours. Move us to look with compassion on the world & seek God where He is to be founds – in our neighbour’s need, whether close at hand or in the world’s most distant land.

Lord, in your mercy….

Loving God, guide and direct the nations of this world to be good neighbours one to another, and to reach across the human barriers that divide us. Let love & compassion conquer evil & hate in every corner of the world, and supply your peace.

Lord, in your mercy….

Abba, we look with horror and anguish at the recent American images of racially induced violence & murder. Only you can bridge the racial divide. Turn hate & fear into love & understanding. Bring justice & peace, and let calm prevail. Shine the light on real reconciliation.

Lord, in your mercy….

God our Protector, sustain police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, and others who attend public safety; equip them to not react to situations out of fear but instead to serve with courage & strength. Uphold those who are sick of mind or body, injured, or who will die on this day, and those who care for them.

We especially pray for those in nursing homes or the home-bound, and for those we name before you…. For those named aloud & in our hearts, and those we’ve forgotten to pray for, send comfort, healing & peace.

Lord, in your mercy….

God of creation, even the seas & lakes, the rocks and the trees are our neighbours. Increase the vitality & beauty of your whole creation and move us to work for its health & well being.

Lord, in your mercy….

Listening God, encourage this assembly in its ministries of prayer & service to others. We pray for Jim Cornelius & Carol Thiessen in their work with Canadian Food Grains Bank, and Miriam Entz in her training of nurses in Mali through Frontiers. Enlarge our capacity for hospitality & our willingness to welcome those who are not like us.

Lord, in your mercy….

Into your loving hands, Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
