Prayers of the People | November 12

God is indeed our stronghold –

Our light, our love, our safety, our comfort, our hope and our trust –

and so I call us as a community into a time of prayer. In response to the words,

Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

On this weekend of Remembrance Day, and concluding Remembrance Week with prayers for peace, we offer prayers in memory of those whose lives continue to be impacted by war; both the wars that have left scars on our own country, as well of the war victims of today.

Calling to mind, heart and soul moments when we feel downcast and disquieted, we pray that you would make us less rather than more patient. Increase in us the longing for fulfillment of your promised time and awaken within us attentiveness to forces, individuals, circumstances or complacency that works against the unfolding of your reign.

Keep us knocking at the door.

Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

Help us to seize your day, make your future present, such that we actively, intentionally and passion-filled-ly bend the arc of justice… even here, even now.

Continuing to be aware of how we are indeed surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses…

we pray for the Body of Christ which overlaps and sometimes even intersects with your Church.

We pray for congregations, outreach ministries, and way-stations along the path.

Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

Walking through life, as sometimes has been said, “with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other,” we pray for all who in measure large or small, passing or paralyzing, feel impacted by disclosures of abuse of power and prestige.

Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

Merciful God:

Support us all the day long, and throughout the night,

as we keep our lamps trimmed and burning,

of this all-too-troublous life,

as the shadows lengthen and the evening comes,

and the busy world is hushed,

and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.

And then, in your tender mercy,

Grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
