Forty Days | a song for Lent

Forty Days | a song for Lent

Charles Garinger brought this new song to us for the 4th Sunday in Lent. He says that it was inspired both by the biblical story of Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness and by a quite remarkable series of forty cartoons drawn by the English illustrator Si Smith. You can view a video compilation of Smith’s cartoons by clicking here.

Led by the Holy Spirit

Into the wilderness

For forty days and forty nights

Three temptations to resist

The devil came to him and said

If you are his son, turn these stones to bread

And even though he was nearly dead

Jesus raised his weary head

And he said

We shall not live on bread alone…

We shall not live on bread alone…

Jesus hungered and was tired

The devil plotted and conspired

Then the devil took him to the holy city

Had him stand on the temple up high

Said if you are the son, then throw yourself down

Let’s see if you can fly

But it’s said

Don’t put the Lord your God to the test…

Don’t put the Lord your God to the test…

Jesus hungered and was tired

The devil plotted and conspired

The devil took him to a mountaintop

Showed him all the earthly kingdoms that be

Said all of this I will give to you

If you will bow down and worship me

Jesus said

Worship the Lord and serve God only…

Worship the Lord and serve God only…

Jesus hungered and was tired

The devil plotted and conspired

Led by the Holy Spirit

Into the wilderness

For forty days and forty nights

All temptations he’d resist

(Charles Garinger)
