I will trust in the Lord

I will trust in the Lord

As we closed our liturgy on Sunday June 21, Charles Garinger led us in a song first taught to us by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove. It is a song that comes from the slave church, and as Jonathan taught it to us, he emphasized that “Trust is the faith statement of the Black church.” “We’re in a struggle after all; a battle for the hearts and souls of people, but we don’t fight like other people fight.”

It just seemed the right song to sing on the Sunday following the shooting of those nine people in Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.
