A note from Jamie Howison: On Monday November 2, 2015 I was delighted to be able to deliver a presentation on some of the themes, music, and ideas from my current book project. The evening was titled Psalms, Truth and the Blues, and was presented at the University of Toronto campus by CRC Campus Ministries/Empire Remixed. The podcast is now available from our iTunes menu, but can also be streamed by clicking the arrow:
A word of thanks to Brian Walsh for arranging the evening and playing the role of host. It is always great to connect with Brian, whose work on Bruce Cockburn – Kicking at the Darkness: Bruce Cockburn and the Christian Imagination – is one of my favourite books exploring the intersection of theology and music. Thanks as well to the musicians who offered up some great live music; Deb Whalen-Blaize, Nathan Wall, and Dave Krause. They did some serious justice to Blind Willie Johnson’s “Soul of a Man” and Bessie Smith’s “Working Man’s Blues,” both of which are featured on the podcast.
And this is very much a book in progress, as I’ve written just couple of draft chapters, with the real heavy lifting yet to come. But you know, I’m so taken with all of the points at which the Psalms and the blues intersect, inform, and comment one into the other that I’m determined to put my writing into high gear… stay tuned!
