Helen Lyons speaks about her art

After living for several years with a lung condition, saint ben’s member Helen Lyons died on May 24, 2016. To remember and honour Helen – one of the earliest members of the saint ben’s community, and the first to awaken us to the visual arts in the life of our community – we’re posting this archival audio of a talk she gave in 2011 as part of a presentation called Talking Art and Faith.

The subject of her talk was her own unique series of prints of the “Stations of the Cross,” a selection of which are included below.

In so many ways Helen was an elder in our community… though I suspect that if I’d said that to her she would have replied, “Don’t call me that, it makes me sound like an old lady!” But she would have laughed as she said it, because she feared neither aging nor death. Elder she was, having come into saint ben’s in our very first year and going on to make wonderful contributions as an artist, a member of the Kitchen Table, an active participant in one of our bi-weekly book breakfast groups, a guide to the arts, and a wonderfully tenacious presence in our midst. She will be missed.
