For a Time Like This: Easter Eve

With the arrival of Holy Saturday or Easter Eve, we asked Alana Levandoski if she would let us share her song “Easter Eve” in one of our occasional music podcasts. We are grateful that she was so quick to give her blessing to this, and we’re pleased to be able to share this song.

Alana-Levandoski

Released on her 2010 E.P. Hymns from the Desert, this song was written during a period of time when Alana was living in Winnipeg and taking part as one of our regular music leaders. She introduced us to this song during our Good Friday liturgy that year, where it provided a starkly moving conclusion to the service. In many ways it isn’t an easy song, as it holds resonances of the women weeping as Jesus’ body was laid in the tomb, and of the fear of the disciples as they hide from the soldiers on the streets. This year it also sounds particularly moving notes for all of us, as we wait in this posture of physical distancing and - for some at least - all but complete self-isolation in our homes. And yet we do know that Jesus’ burial does not mark the end of his story, which is a very important thing to hold on to today.

It’s over now

And we are lost

In a desert without tears

Guess it wasn’t what we thought

Wish we could turn back the years

But there’s no way out of here

There’s no way out of here

There’s no way out of here

It’s over now

So say good-bye

But our mouths can’t shape the words

Shut your doors

Don’t even try

’cause no matter what you’ve heard

There’s no way out of here

There’s no way out of here

There’s no way out of here

Come back

Please come back

Wake up

Please wake up

’cause there’s no way out of here

There’s no way out of here

There’s no way out of here
