Improvising Peace
Chris Dingman is a vibraphonist and composer based in New York City, where this interview was conducted in early January 2020. He has worked with such legendary artists as Anthony Braxton, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, as well as with an array of up and coming innovators. In his New York Times review of the Waking Dreams album, jazz critic Ben Ratliff wrote that, “Mr. Dingman’s own style stands out: he uses it not just for melody and percussion but also for sound, in long, smoky chords beaming out like floodlighting.” Chris also regularly plays at the Jazz Vespers services at St Peter’s Church in Manhattan.
His work can be heard on his solo albums, Waking Dreams ,The Subliminal and the Sublime, and the newly released Embrace. His current project is his most personal. Titled “The Peace Project,” it is the focus of much of the podcast conversation.
