Palm Sunday

The Liturgy for Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021, is available here.

Palm Sunday is a day of stark contrasts. It marks the end of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week or Passion Week. Jesus, the peaceful preacher, receives a military hero’s welcome and is greeted like a King while riding on a humble young colt or donkey. The starkest contrast, of course, is the crowd who cheer with cries of “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” but who will, in a short week’s time, jeer for Jesus’ execution.

We celebrate Palm Sunday with all the vigour of the triumphal entry, replete with palms and our own cries of “Hosanna!” submitting with joy to Jesus’ lordship over our lives. But we celebrate with the grim knowledge that we also turn our backs on Jesus. We also encounter Jesus and find a ruler we were not expecting, one whose glory is expressed through suffering and whose power is manifest in a criminal’s death. And we turn to other lords who capture our attention with glitz and glitter.

This year we invite you to join us on Sunday March 28, 2021 at 7pm for our Palm Sunday service. Bring something green along to represent palms or download and colour one of these pages.
